What is DNA Bird Sexing?

It’s not always easy to tell the sex of your pet bird just by looking at them. Unlike dogs and cats, birds need a different way to identify their gender. And as you know, this is because their genitals are not visible, and instead of trying to look, you need a different approach to determine whether your bird is a male or female.

Genetic Testing

DNA sexing can be performed with blood, feather or eggshell samples. Identifying your pet bird’s gender can be helpful knowledge to have. Here are some common reasons it can be helpful or necessary to identify a pet bird’s gender:

  • If an owner starts with one bird and decides to add another, determining the gender of the current pet bird can help ensure compatibility with the new bird or prevent (or allow) breeding.

  • Knowing the gender of a pet bird is also useful information for the family’s veterinarian. For instance, if a pet bird is sitting in the corner of its cage and exhibiting fluffed-up feathers, a swollen abdomen, and weakness, the vet may be more inclined to check the bird for egg-binding.

If you genuinely want to know the gender of your lovebird, the only foolproof way of knowing for sure is to opt for DNA analysis. DNA sexing has been shown to provide over 99.99% accuracy in determining a bird’s sex.

We offer an AVIAN GENETIC TESTING service for all our baby birds for a flat rate of $35.00. Just let us know if you would like to add this service.
