Lovebird Baths

Updated: May 2, 2023

Routine Lovebird Baths Are Good for Your Bird’s Skin Health.

Some lovebirds love water and bathe readily, while others are scared of water and make bathing difficult. Bathing helps to clean their feathers of bird dust and makes them feel less itchy. Moreover, a clean bird equals a clean environment, which is safer for both the birds and the owners. Dust can get trapped on a bird’s skin and cause irritation and itching. Poor Lovebird hygiene has been identified as one of the contributing factors in feather plucking.

Lovebirds need to take a bath at least once a week in winter and daily (if possible) in summer. Although some pet supply companies market commercial "bird shampoos," the best and safest way to bathe your bird is with plain water.

Ways to Encourage Your Lovebirds to Bathe

Lovebirds are stubborn, especially when they are moody or bored. They may not take a bath even after many efforts by the owners. Here are some ways to encourage bathing in lovebirds:

  • Pretend to Be Excited About the Bath. Act as if you are enjoying bathing by splashing your fingers in the bowl and making "excited" sounds.

  • Lovebirds may want to bathe but may be scared to jump in at the same time. When this happens, include spinach leaves or cilantro leaves in the water bowl. This way, your pets won't get intimidated by the water and will probably plunge in.

  • If the above methods don't work, try spray bathing your lovebirds. Misting is a great way to keep your bird happy and healthy. You can use a spray bottle filled with warm water. Do not use soap, as it could dry out your Lovebird’s skin.

Keep in Mind the Following

  • Birds should be bathed during a time when they are most active and alert, such as in the morning or early afternoon. Avoid bathing them at night or when they are tired or sleepy.

  • The water temperature should be lukewarm, not too hot or too cold. Birds are sensitive to extreme temperatures, and very hot or very cold water can be harmful to their feathers and skin.

In summary, birds need to bathe to maintain their feather health, rehydrate, preen, and engage in natural behaviors. Providing your pet bird with a regular bath can help to keep them healthy, happy, and thriving.
