How To Train A Lovebird

Lovebirds are intelligent, active little birds that make great pets. They are known for being very affectionate with their owners and can even learn tricks! Before you start training your Lovebird, it’s important to understand that every bird is different and will learn at their own pace. With that in mind, start with the basics and build up from there.

  • Find a comfortable training space: Always choose a training area with few distractions. As birds are having only short attention spans, it is best to keep the cage in a space comfortable for both the trainer and the pet.

  • Create a safe training environment: Make sure you keep lovebirds in a safe environment. You can switch off the fan and other electronic devices that you think may harm your pet.

  • Don’t forget to reward: While you are preparing the space for your pet bird, always keep some special food near you so that you can reward your bird for its accomplishments. The reward can be anything such as nuts and fruits.

Some of the easiest tricks to teach a lovebird include step-up (getting onto your hand or finger), spin (spinning around in place), and wave (waving hello or goodbye).

How To Train A Lovebird To Sit On Your Finger

To train a lovebird to sit on your finger, start by holding your hand out to the bird and letting it sniff your fingers. Once the bird is comfortable with your hand, slowly raise your hand up to the bird’s chest and allow it to step onto your finger. Once the bird is sitting on your finger, give it a treat and praise it. Repeat this process until the bird is consistently sitting on your finger.
