Caring For Baby Lovebirds: A Delicate Process

Updated: Oct 29, 2023

During hand feeding, a baby bird learns about trusting humans in general, not just a particular person. A bird will go on to have the closest of bonds with the human being who takes him or her home to love and care for her for the rest of their life.

Hand-raising a baby lovebird is a huge responsibility. It is just like raising a child. However, many difficulties can occur while handfeeding. The most common problems seen with handfeeding are burned crops, malnutrition, pneumonia due to aspirated food, sour crop, and bacterial infections.

An ethical and responsible breeder will not let you take home an un-weaned bird. Breeders who try to convince you that it is “easy” and that the bird will bond to you better are most likely just trying to save themselves a few weeks of work.

Please let those with experience raise your bird until it is ready to be delivered into your care. You can then bond with an emotionally secure and healthy bird that is ready for life in a new home.
